Fake and adulterated animal feeds are one of the biggest silent problems for Kenyan farmers. We receive calls regularly from farmers whose cows dropped milk, chickens stopped laying, or pigs grew slowly — and in many cases, the culprit is counterfeit feed sold under a trusted brand name.
As the authorized Fugo distributor in Kenya (Hotline Agrovet, Tala Machakos), we source directly from Unga Farm Care and can tell you exactly what genuine Fugo looks like — and what the fakes miss.
Signs of Genuine Fugo Feeds
- KEBS certification mark: Every genuine Fugo bag has the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) mark and batch number on the bag.
- Unga Farm Care branding: Look for the Unga Group logo and "Manufactured by Unga Farm Care Ltd" printed clearly on the bag.
- Consistent colour and texture: Genuine Fugo Dairy Meal is a uniform brown/tan colour. Layer Compleat is a consistent greyish-brown crumble. Any unusual colours (green patches, white clumps) are warning signs.
- Fresh, neutral smell: Good feeds smell slightly nutty and wholesome. Musty, sour, or ammonia smells indicate spoilage or adulteration.
- Correct weight: A 50kg bag should weigh exactly 50kg. Weigh it at the agro-dealer if you can.
- Sealed stitching: Factory-stitched bags, not hand-tied or re-sewn bags (a common sign of refilling).
Simple Field Tests Farmers Use
The Water Test (for Dairy Meal)
Dissolve 2 tablespoons of Dairy Meal in a glass of water. Genuine Fugo should dissolve evenly with a uniform brown colour. Sand or excessive filler will sink to the bottom. White layers can indicate added chalk (calcium carbonate filler).
The Smell Test
Open a bag and smell deeply. Genuine feed smells fresh and slightly earthy. A musty, mouldy, or very dusty smell is a red flag for aflatoxin contamination.
The Performance Test
The most reliable test is animal performance. Switching to a new supplier? Monitor your daily egg count, milk litres, or piglet weight gain for the first 2 weeks. A genuine product maintains or improves performance.
Where Fake Feeds Come From
Most counterfeit feeds in Kenya come from:
- Unregistered mixing plants using cheap, off-spec ingredients
- Repackaging of lower-grade feeds in brand-name bags
- Expired or rejected feeds sold through informal channels
- Dilution — mixing genuine feeds with maize bran or sand
How to Protect Yourself
- Buy only from authorized distributors — ask for proof of authorization from Unga Farm Care
- Avoid very low prices — if a price is 20%+ below market, ask why
- Check the bag condition — genuine factory bags are never re-sewn or patched
- Report suspicious feeds to KEBS: 0800 721 222
